If you are going to work live in the room you need stamina! All the other skills Katie mentions are a must too. I don't do short sessions or half days becase they generally arent worth it moneywise, especially when travel is invoved.

All 3 articles sound great. But have a wee soft sport for “you will suck”because I’ve been trying to move from sketchnoting for myself to graphic recording - oh my, it is messy.

“You WILL suck please” feels like a very unseemly thing to request but would be great all the same

The dyslexia one! But all your articles are fab—your voice shines through, and I've never wanted to read about illustration so much as when you Goodshippers talk about it :D

Why are we up and doing this Substacky stuff so early? Bloody hell, whatever happened to ravelling up the sleeve of care and catching up on much-needed sleep? Raising a vast cup of coffee to ya, Missus x

I’ll take all, but especially 1. You’ve talked before about being an introvert. That is definitely something I would like to hear more how you get over that when doing a live event.

In the posting for the job, is it clear if it is actually at the venue or what key words to look for if I want to do from the comfort of my own home?

I was going to practice by watching TED Talks, but you mention they are harder because of being rehearsed. How does that make it harder to illustrate?

The sheer nature of TED talks is that there is a lot to capture in a short space - (15 mins) of time, so they are intense and like Katie says - very heavily scripted, whereas actual events usually have natural breaks, and you’ll find that the presenters often will repeat the important stuff more than once. I started by practicing with Ted talks and then I found an event near me and offered my services in exchange for lots of publicity - I was working large scale on paper (2mx1m) so I couldn’t really hide in a corner! … this was 12 years ago before digital really took off .. I realized at that event that there was a lot more breathing room. Like Katie says it’s just a case of practicing loads…. And then loads more.

Wow, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts Verity! I’ve watch TED talks and you are right, they do repeat the important stuff. I’m going to stick with practicing by watching TED talks, maybe some podcast, too. We do monthly meetings at work( I work at circ in a library). My boss always does an agenda, too. You seem to have found your groove after all these years, so I appreciate you sharing your experiences.

Thx Jackie. Podcasts and weekly meetings are great options for practice… the Good Ship podcasts always have some really solid nuggets to capture!

Yes, Goodship podcast and Art Juice are my 2 favorite Art podcasts. I take notes from them, but don’t always add doodles. I will be doing that more now!
