Paid subscription to your jobs board is a bargain. Your curated Live Illustration jobs served up once a week versus trawling vague 'Design and Creative' jobs boards, social media# or industry mags is a major time-saver first off. There are so few specific, quality illustration jobs advertised ( plenty of low-ballers chancing it on X and Linkedin tho).
And then there's money saved on agents %, subs to multiple industry publications, associations etc....
Great post! For starting artists, I can also recommend the Comic Lab Podcast. Cartoonists Brad Guigar and Dave Kellett give advice on how to make a living from comics, and much of it is applicable to other artists as well.
And they have an archive of SEVEN YEARS of WEEKLY PODCASTS! That's a fortnight of continuous free advice! By the way: I'm also very much enjoying The Good Ship. It's so gentle and insightful. It's like having a good chat over tea with three knowledgeable friendly colleagues.
Katie you are heroic for putting your head above the parapet and telling it like it is. I so respect your honesty, it really is a breath of fresh air. Having worked in industry for over 20 years I know there will always be people who throw stones, easier now with social media, put your umbrella up and let it rain off you!.. ☔️ I wish I’d heard a strong voice like yours when I was starting out. Keep inspiring us all with your lovely posts 💪🤗
May I recommend @blueshinearts’ YouTube and Instagram and Substack ? Charlotte has been so kind making her daily lives available to everyone ! She’s been a huge help for me, as the Good Ship classes !
Katie, you're wonderful. Don't let anyone else think otherwise. I know you know, but it's always nice to have a reminder. You're doing an amazing job and we, fellow illustrators, are sooo lucky to have you around. You're honestly the best source of information regarding illustration and freelancing out there.
How dare you make money out of your expertise dear Katie!! ;) I'm not a live scriber (yet) and live in Australia. But I've bitten the bullet and am about to quit my soul-destroying part time job, to get back into a freelance illo business (it's been many years but I'm up for it). So I've signed up to the jobs board and am going to keep my eye out for any little non-live jobs that may turn up while I whip my portfolio into shape. Keep up the good work Katie - we really need pro-active people like you in the industry!
I'm not a live scribey type illustrator so while it's not for me, if it was I'd be all over it, throwing my money at you. What this post has made me want more than anything though, is macaroni cheese.
Those stupid boys need a 👋🏾 to the face and a 🦵 to the arse.
Thanks for all that you do to help illustrators Katie. It’s brilliant.
disclaimer- i don’t condone violence. I’m all talk 🤪

Wonderful as always and such a brilliant response, when challenged, offer more, that’s my kind of gate keeping. 😍
Silly boys. Guessing it comes from a place of insecurity. They’ll learn eventually. Keep up the good work Katie ✨
I would like to thank those silly naughty boys for inspiring this wonderful post.
You're a gem, Katie! And you're generous. You're GEMerous!

Ah is that a rusty old gate I can hear flapping in the breeze? Somebody go man it for Christ’s sake!

If you are a gatekeeper I'm sorry to tell you, you are pretty rubbish at your job! 😆 Love this post, love your humour. xxx

my work here is done. Macaroni cheese is life.
Gonna lean on the gate to catch my breath from all the amazing stuff you’re sending out it into the world
This is such a helpful email! Even more resources than I realised so I’ll definitely be saving this one to come back to :)
