Ignore the haters.

This job board is a great idea and so much better and fairer than other job boards I have looked at. I'm not up to speed to apply for live illustration jobs yet, so I am stalking a bit and am a free subscriber. But getting an idea of what is out there, and what you can get paid is great!

Anyone complaining about not getting a job after a £7 investment cannot be taken seriously - you pays your money and you takes your chances.

KEEP GOING. KEEP INSPIRING ME AND SO MANY OTHERS. xxx

Does this mean the jobs board is ending? I personally have no intention of applying for live illustration work again for a while but seeing these jobs posted is gold to me. It’s reaffirms to me that people need our work, that there is scope for us to market ourselves for a wide range of events, that we should be charging big money not peanuts, that when I’m ready I can look back at the work that others have done and be inspired to carve out my own version of this. People want something for nothing. Seriously, if you moaned to Katie, get a grip! This is gold and you should either be grateful or just unsubscribe quietly!

So I accidentally dropped a years worth of sub instead of monthly. 60 smackeroonies* I couldn’t afford. But it meant that now I had to give it a fighting chance for the next year.

Then there was the portfolio review offer of £250. Yeah… still can’t afford that. And all I have is a pdf of the live work, even though I’ve got a website for my regular illu work.

But these three things combined plus the HOW MUCH WORK IS THERE OUT THERE! Good grief I need to get my brain into gear.

So despite having illustration work on the table, the fact is the big wheel. The what? The this…

If you put the money on the table thing first, that’s a little wheel. It needs lots of pushes to make it roll. The big wheel is the thing that takes longer to do but once done takes the same amount of push from energy to make it turn once as the little wheel. But because it’s bigger it goes further each time.

Part of me with this sub thing is ‘well it doesn’t seem to be working’ but when you’ve got sixty quid evaporating like camel pee under a hot desert sun, and an attitude of ‘whatever I do, any spend must wipe its face’ I realised I hadn’t given it its best chance.

The best chance was build the website, as that was a weak link. It would only take a couple of days. Illustration work could wait. I’ll catch up.

TWO WEEKS LATER full time 😳 yesterday I launched the creature! And shoved two applications for gigs in for good measure and it felt so much better than sending a pdf link.

Launched it on LinkedIn with loads of people saying how great it was.

And even had an enquiry from someone who, whilst it was a different sort of enquiry ended up being a graphic recording of sorts. And I could send them to the new website for examples. I’m now working with them.

And there’s already interest spinning about the particular offer I’ve put out there.

So what this sub has done for me is get my butt into gear and get the best asset I could build working for me. Yes it needs improvements. But I’ll do that over time. For now it works and feedback is great! So thanks! (Just play the numbers game for the rest of the year, and make some spare mullah for the portfolio review)

Now back to the regular illustration work …

——

*I did pay btw for the £60 option… does that mean I get a reduction on the portfolio review? 😁

Hello! That made me laugh. I signed up a couple of days ago, my first time on the ship.

I am getting some jobs, but I would like more tasty jobs! And more jobs that feel very 'me'. Looking forward to being a human sponge and soaking up all the juicy knowledge 😁

This Jobs Board is a Wonderful idea Katie! Even though I couldn’t sign up for both the Business Course and the Live Illustration course, I decided to subscribe to the Jobs Board just to get an idea of what’s out there and to support your work! I’m hoping to take it the next time it is open( and by that time, I hope I would have a few live( remote) illustration jobs under my belt).

I subscribed as have been live-illustration-curious and this has already given me a useful insight into the discipline. It's also super- upbeat to see all this work about.

I have registered my interest to take part in a notional future live illustration course- and having had a few stabs at it in my studio, quietly, under cover and not telling a soul, I definitely need some coaching. Also newly in awe of the work all you live illustrators knock out. It's so impressive!

I am still on the hunt for great resources: I couldn't find anything on Domestika...

So will hang out quietly on the plastic stacked chairs at the edges of this disco till I get my license.

Keep up the good work, and THANK YOU Katie :-)

Ha ha you are a wag :) to be honest, I’ve never understood the mentality of people who are actually trying to run a business, quibbling over extremely small amounts of money and saying that they can’t afford things that are very things that could open doors for them. As someone who coaches creative I do butt up against this mindset quite a bit. Luckily, there are enough people who do understand that investing in yourself and your business is the thing that gets it moving sometimes! and as someone else has already pointed out, sometimes when you pay for something, however, small amount of money, it does give you fuel to actually think about your business differently. That’s a bit of a mind flip when you do that. I think your illustration job board is an absolutely brilliant idea! keep on keeping on!

I looove the jobs board. It keeps me pepped up! I know I won't get most/all of the jobs, but it's v. reassuring. It's also inspiring to see the different type of jobs and clients, and think of new ones to target myself. It's pushed me to keep improving my SEO and I'm already getting more direct enquiries!

p.s. I'm already in the business course from last time and defo going to follow along for a recap!

Since the jobs board I’ve felt so much more empowered and confident about putting myself forward and creating work I’m proud of! It’s not all about landing every job, it’s more seeing what’s out there and the BIG budgets that people have that really inspires me, regardless of what I land or don’t land. THANK YOU for sharing them!!! 💖

Morning! I am not a live illustrator so haven’t signed up but I love knowing that you are passing on the stuff you can’t do in a centralised spot for others. WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?

Let’s face it - people lash out online (do they”?!”) and often do so as a result of crapping themselves about something or other (paying the bills/paying for kids things/being insecure about ability to get jobs even when someone is kind enough to dish ‘em out). Problem is with the person (and am sure they wake up with the sweats about it on the reg) not with you.

We all know what happens to people who kick puppies (ie lovely people who do no harm and share out work) … we’ve all read Dante (you know what I mean - not sure he has a bit on people that are twats online but he would have done if he was writing now…) … LOL!

You ARE doing the right thing Katie. Keep doing it.

Lots of love and keeeep sharing (god I hate myself….) xxxx

ps. I'm in the Business Course and it is excellent. There is so much information and advice that I have only begun to process it. I baulked a bit before paying, but I don't regret it. I'll be digging back into that rich seam of business knowledge for the foreseeable future. THANKS

Katie, the fact that you've provided this jobs board is AMAZING and done completely out of your own kindness. Thank you for trying to offer value and help to so many of us illustrators around the world. And then on top of that, you're also providing illustration advice here, making this Substack even more valuable. I'm based in NZ, so outside of a lot of the live illustration gigs geography, but I still signed up for a sub to a) thank you for all the free advice and resources you've provided across your various channels, and b) to access more of your advice and any non-location specific illustration jobs. You're providing a service for both potential clients and illustrators and should be compensated for that. It's not your fault if people don't get work out of it. I thoroughly look forward to joining the Business course when you do your next live round <3

Well said Katie! I am currently doing the Good Ship Courses and intend to sign up to your Jobs Board once I’ve got a portfolio I’m happy with. What you’re doing is helpful and inspiring. If people are not getting jobs then maybe they need to work a bit harder and make better work instead of blaming someone who’s only trying to help!

Katie, I LOVE this jobs board. Please ignore the neggy-Mc-neggers out there. I haven’t applied for a single opportunity on the board yet. I still think the board is superb value. I work my self to an exhausted crisp for every penny I earn and I think the £7 p/m whatevs it is, is the BEST money I spend for the WHOLE MONTH. I’m an illustrator, currently working full time doing other jobs, doing the freak flag course atm and really pushing (dragging myself like Sarah Connor in the disused factory) away from the mundane jobs I don’t want anymore and towards the LIGHT of a life doing Illustration, for cold hard cash, which will buy me more time to do more glorious illustration. Your board and ALL your substack/emails bring me joy and hope. They punctuate my week with little reminders of what I’m moving towards and keep me motivated. The jobs ads are helping me get my portfolio together. I’m using the board as motivation and a guide. Because of this board (you) I’ve goal set and planned this year, at a point where I was starting to feel so gloomy about the prospect of ever getting anywhere with my illustration. I’ve begun doing Live Ills practice (at home and at large!) and have a timeline to work to. You’ve given me a real kick into action. I’m pretty sure I’ll be hiring your eyes for my website when it’s updated by mid May. This jobs board is SUPER important. Thanks for thinking it up and delivering it. Please keep it going ! 🫶🏻👏🏻👊🏻
