I went to write "I love this Katie" but mistyped "I live this Katie". Which is ironic because both statements are wholly accurate! I shall be following with keen interest x
I have been feeling this! Sometimes there’s even a nice joy in being a disappointment, and there’s power in resisting the urge to apologise for having other priorities 🤷🏻♀️
I like this! My current 'mantra' (incessant intrusive thought-loop) popped into my head after a nap. "Stop trying to be good." It's working VERY well for drawing.
Well, that was such a disappointment. In the spirit of also planning to underperform, fail to meet expectations and generally survey my barren field wherein many a fuck has perished, count me in.
I personally think you’re pretty amazing to be so busy with your own work, a little girl to tend to and your Good Ship commitments.
( I’m currently on your ‘Live Illustration Course’ ); it’s beautifully crafted, bite size information means the learning journey is easy to manage and a pleasure. I still haven’t got round to being part of the FB group but otherwise I’m keen and keeping up to date.
I am currently signed off work with burnout because trying to please everyone made me poorly, I NEED to remove the need to please/ apologise. I am determined when I get back to work to be nothing but a disappointment....next decision do I declare this to my boss 🤔..
I AM IN! Also having a child at home (not mine but still. Being a step-mum is hard), I live with the feeling of being a constant disappointment. I grow my own vegetables, home-cook all the meals, trying to balance everybody's tastes in the house as well as keeping everyone healthy, and I always (okay not always, but it feels like always) get a "Eww, that's gross", or "I told you I didn't like vegetables! Why do you always put vegetables?!" And this is just the top of the iceberg. As I'm sure you will know soon Katie (if not already!). At the moment when I feel like a disappointment to others I feel like screaming to them "Well f*** you!" very loudly. But I don't. Because I'm nice. Instead I leave and go to my studio to draw, aaaaandd... move on to feeling like a disappointment to myself because nothing good comes out of my hands! Ahhh why is life so hard!!! ^^'
My own Disappointment Challenge is about being more honest about my limited capacity.
I have various ‘invisible’ illnesses. Trying to keep up can drain all my energy, and PEM* flare-ups can set me back even further. Then the cycle repeats, and there’s little left for my art practice.
My version of the Disappointment Challenge is admitting that some things have to slide, slip away, or not happen at all. I might need to cancel at short notice. I might need to lower my own expectations.
Not because I don’t care, but because I need to protect the small amount of energy I have for the things that give my life meaning.
This couldn’t have come at a better time. People-pleasing, fear of saying ‘no’ in case I disappoint, fear of failing have blighted most aspects of my adult life. I’m so up for this challenge!
I have had feelings of disappointing my father. A freelance journalist. He died when I was 11. I was not the brightest person in the class and failed my 11 plus, badly. As unclassified when you were given grades. I knuckled down and was in the top four of my school year. Joint 2nd with two others and one person ahead of us. My mother gave all the support and let me go to Art College, one of the two things my dad was dead set against for a career. It was after my mother died, then the 50 anniversary of his death and visiting their grave that I have felt I had resolution.
I had a torrid time after failing to get on a MA course, trying to decide if I was making art for myself or for the market. In the end, I went into commercial printing. Thankfully, after working with a couple of fine art printers, I realised it was "who you knew, not what you knew". I had a half offer of a dream job but the potential manager backed out the following day, however, I could see the future problem of his micro management and could accept the loss.
Having had moved jobs a few times and had various interviews for jobs. You can accept not getting the job. It is experiences of life that has got me to this point. Could I have got there sooner? Maybe, but I feel good about my work now and can move on from disappointed.
oh wow Phillip, what a life! Your Mum sounds great. And I think one of the certainties of life is that whateverrrrr we do (even if it is our absolute best, with the time and energy we have) someone will be disappointed. Death, taxes, disappointment haha. That sounds really depressing when I word it like that but it feels freeing! Like phew, no need to worry about people being disappointed now because it’s just a rite of passage / a sign that you’re alive

Great work Katie ☺️
So good. I must stop saying yes to things I do not want to do so I’m not a disappointment. I’m exhausted - need to be more Katie and take some naps

Talk about synchronicity! I just journaled about my fear of disappointing people yesterday. Definitely here for this.
Ahhhh I love this! I WAS BORN FOR IT

Yes, I must join in on this. I am getting better at it but would like to see all the various ways you disappoint people, so I can take notes 😄

Oo I love this! I felt inside me how there are some people I’m particularly looking forward to disappointing! What a fun game - count me in ☺️
