I'm curious to know how live illustration works when you do it remotely. Do you just join the event online and start drawing or do you say hello to everyone at the event beforehand and introduce yourself?

oooh yes sometimes the client wants me to switch my camera on and do a nice awkward “hello. I’m Katie. I’ll be drawing the things you talk about. Bye” at the start of the event. Most of the time though, they just mention that an illustrator is present and let me keep my dignity 🤣❤️

Excited for your course Katie!! I really feel like I would be good at Live Illustration, as a graphic designer and lover of sketching - I'm on the edge of my seat!

Now I just need to fast track my German language skills to open up that market.... have you come across many people who offer dual language live work? Wondering if I might use my husband to translate to english...hmmm...thinking out loud here...ramble over!

i’ve definitely seen lots of multi-lingual scribes in the wild, yes! Dual-language in one scribe? I haven’t seen that but it would be very cool - some events have live translators so you’d be doing two jobs at once? 😅 maybe there’s a gap in the market!?

Hi Katie

Great that you were able to do this and thank you for inviting questions.

I am keen to develop a Live illustration offer and have been enjoying lots of practise

(- I did a post about my efforts here: https://substack.com/@janespencerillustration/p-159992564)

A big concern if go for this is about hearing the speaker- I wear hearing aids- I mostly get along fine in my day to day but some rooms have acoustics I just can't manage - it's not always about the volume, sometimes the clarity is just not there for me. Have you ever noticed an issue with sound at live events? Anybody else got any experiences to share?

Thanks! enjoy the garden !

ohhh good question! Not all events are created equal in terms of sound. In my experience, it’s best to state your needs up front and then advocate for yourself on the day. It’s in the clients best interest to make sure you can hear what’s being said (and when i’m doing remote events, the audio being clear is THEEEE most important thing - i don’t care about being able to see what’s going on).

The good thing is that there’s usually a tech rehearsal / set up time where you should be able to check what the sound is like and figure out where is best to sit :)

Since this was the shortest live ever (parcel delivery, toddler thumping on the door saying “come outsiiiiide mummy”) feel free to drop any other live illustration questions you have in the comments.
